Mentorship and career guidance can have a profound impact on the professional development of postdoctoral scholars. In recognition of the importance of this mentorship, and in compliance with section 7008 of the America Competes Act, NSF requies that all proposals containing postdoctoral researchers provide a description of the mentoring activities that are or will be provided to the postdoc. When funding for a postdoctoral researcher is requested as part of a proposal to NSF,  a mentoring plan of not more than one page must be submitted as a supplementary document to the proposal.

According to the NSF's Grant Proposal Guide (Chapter II.C.2.j), "[e] xamples of mentoring activities include, but are not limited to: career counseling; training in preparation of grant proposals, publications and presentations; guidance on ways to improve teaching and mentoring skills; guidance on how to effectively collaborate with researchers from diverse backgrounds and disciplinary areas; and training in responsible professional practices."
